The Gift of Being Seen: The Joy of Visits on the Mission Field

Kisselbaughs visit Frantz family on the mission field

Life on the mission field is often marked by beauty, purpose, and deep dependence on the Lord. However, it can also carry a weight many don’t expect. Missionaries move to a new country and begin their attempt at adaptation. There are new social norms, different living conditions, and new languages, or changes in how to communicate. They can find themselves battling loneliness and a sense of disconnection. A visit from home doesn’t solve the problem of cultural isolation. It doesn’t erase loneliness. But it does offer something incredibly meaningful: a reminder that you are not forgotten. It’s a chance to come up for air.

A Dinner That Meant More

When Scott and Monica Kisselbaugh (pictured above) planned a European vacation in 2025, they decided to do something simple but intentional. Remembering a Campus Outreach team in one of their destinations, they reached out to ask if they could visit. They were so thankful they did: “We loved it!” Monica said. “Campus Outreach means so much to us, has changed our lives, and even brought us together as a couple. We want to do this anywhere we go where there’s a team!”

Nate and Roxann Frantz, along with their four children, welcomed the Kisselbaughs. They gave them a glimpse into their everyday lives—navigating a new language, adjusting to new schools, and building ministry on a college campus far from home. They shared stories and a meal. Everyone left encouraged.

A Business Trip That Brought Joy

John Stein, a Campus Outreach SERVE board member, recently traveled to Cape Town, South Africa, for business. When he found out a day was free, he reached out and spent a short but meaningful time with the CO team. He met with James, the team leader, and Steven, the pastor of the local church, shared a meal with students, and toured the campus.

What he saw as a small gesture meant far more to those on the ground.

“Meeting with John was great!” Brett Sterrett shared. His teammate, Emma, added, “It was so nice to see the friendly face of someone who is familiar with Campus Outreach and, honestly, America.” What feels small to one can bring joy to another.

A Simple Gift with Eternal Impact

Visits won’t fix everything, but they do something powerful: they remind missionaries that they are known. strengthen weary hearts. provide familiarity and a chance to relax.

In seasons marked by cultural adjustment, spiritual battles, and quiet loneliness—a visit becomes a gift.

So, if you find yourself traveling across the country or across the world, consider who you could encourage along the way. Because sometimes, the most meaningful ministry looks like showing up, sharing a meal, and reminding someone they’re not alone.

Encourage someone you know by sharing this story with them.
